Science Innovation Masterclass
Innovators and entrepreneurs wanting to understand more about the UK’s future knowledge economy will be treated to an evening of discussion and unrivalled insights from two of Nottingham’s successful businessmen and leading academics.
This Innovation Masterclass event will build upon Nottingham’s Science City credentials as Ian Wilding and Simon Fishel share with the audience their experience in exploiting cutting edge scientific research to create successful businesses. They will answer questions from the audience and from BBC presenter Rob Pittam.
The free event will take place on March 22 at 5.30pm at Trent Vineyard Church.
Dr Ian Wilding steered Pharmaceutical Profiles to its current status as a world renowned specialist in early phase drug development. It now carries out projects for most of the world’s major pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations using innovative technologies, such as the Enterion™ drug delivery capsule, and sophisticated medical imaging. The company underwent a successful MBO in 2005.
Dr Simon Fishel, PhD, is Managing Director of CAREfertility and is one of the world’s most eminent specialists in the field of fertility treatment. He is recognised for his pioneering work in embryology and IVF, having been involved in many of the pioneering events in IVF since its inception. Fishel formed CARE in 1997 with the aim of making IVF treatment more widely available and maximising opportunities for those seeking treatment.
This event is the seventh in a three-year series aimed at inspiring the city’s business leaders of tomorrow and puts emerging entrepreneurs into contact with business leaders who have succeeded through innovation. Launched in March 2006 by John Saunders of Experian it is run by Nottingham Development Enterprise.
Neil Horsley, Chief Executive of NDE, reflected that one year following the launch, the events have proved to be an inspirational mid week pick-me-up for the directors of young businesses.
"The feedback I receive reinforces how these 'tales of endeavour' from battle scarred entrepreneurs are really spot on for encouraging people who've just started out as well as more seasoned campaigners."
An optional workshop on technology transfer will begin 4.00pm prior to the main event. The workshop will be a facilitated discussion between attendees and guests who have been practically involved in research and development and technology transfer initiatives. The workshop will aim to help businesses involved in or wanting to be involved in research and development to understand some of the pitfalls and barriers to success whilst giving hints and tips on how to succeed.
